What are the causes of burnout?

While the causes have different origins, the prevalenceof work-related psychological sufferingis often noted , a prevalence that is found among managers rather than workers. Conflicts of values, loss of meaning linked to one's activity, moral harassment, brutal management, lack of personal development or contradictory injunctions from superiors are all triggering factors.

What are the symptoms of burnout?

It is a “physical, emotional and mental exhaustion that results from prolonged investment in emotionally demanding work situations”1.

We will generally present five typologies of symptoms which will sometimes appear cumulatively:

  • Emotional manifestations (ill-defined fears, nervous tension, irritability or lack of emotion, etc.);
  • Physical manifestations (sleep disorders, chronic fatigue, muscle tension with spinal pain, weight variation, headaches, nausea, dizziness, etc.);
  • Cognitive manifestations (decreased concentration, difficulty performing several tasks at once, making decisions, etc.);
  • Behavioral manifestations (withdrawal, social isolation, aggressive behavior, resentment and hostility towards colleagues and addictive behavior: tobacco, alcohol, tranquilizers, drugs, etc.);
  • Motivational manifestations (progressive disengagement, decline in motivation and morale, erosion of values associated with work, doubt about one's skills, professional questioning, devaluation).

What spa treatment is best for treating burnout?

The first instinct for a patient whose extreme anxiety prevents them from moving forward and living peacefully is to take medication or seek psychological intervention. However, spa treatment for psychosomatic conditions is beneficial because it is non-stigmatizing and helps the patient wean themselves off the drug.

Indeed, people suffering from burnout easily adopt addictive behaviors. They will be prone to self-medication with psychostimulants (amphetamines, cocaine, caffeine, modafinil, etc.) and excessive consumption of alcohol and anxiolytics. The treatment will gradually help them reduce their consumption of harmful substances.

In addition to the application of the thermal protocol reserved for the treatment of depressive states (combination of baths, general jet showers, underwater massages and swimming in the pool), the treatment is also a place of neutral space dedicated to speaking.

Many spa guests will be able to make a lifestyle choice during this “break”.

To date, five spas in France offer treatments with a focus on psychosomatic disorders (PSY). They use natural, low-mineralized, calcium- and magnesium-rich mineral waters, and some also contain lithium, whose mood-regulating activity is well known.

Recognizing the signs: prevention objective

To prevent a person suffering from burnout from collapsing, it is important to act early as soon as the first signs appear:

  • sleep disorders,
  • anxieties,
  • chronic fatigue state,
  • concentration problems,
  • change in behavior, etc.

At the professional level, these signs will manifest themselves through:

  • a drop in performance,
  • repeated mistakes,
  • depersonalization,
  • a loss of motivation, etc.

So, an employer will have to worry about seeing one of his employees, usually involved in his work and ambitious, gradually sinking into chronic indifference for no apparent reason.

Prescribing mini-treatments, in the absence of a standard treatment, is already a solution. They will be useful for prevention or stabilization of the "post-burnout" patient.
